How a fitness editor works

How a fitness editor works? How did I become an editor?

A lot of people in my life have asked me that question previously of how I became one. Well, to be honest it is not easy to make it to the top and work for the best and most prestigous magazines. It is a really long and complicated way. You start to work for free as an intern and then if you are lucky and good enough, you can climb to better and better editorial offices. Work at these places is not actually as glamurous and fancy as it sounds. However, if you know the trends, you are open-minded and a hardworking person, you are ready to work flexible hours, it might be a profession for you.

How a fitness editor works? Who is a fitness editor?

People usually think that an editor basically goes to events, press days, travels a lot and receives gifts from many brands every day. It is not actually true. It is just this nicer side of being an editor. People like you and respect you. You have the power of writing your content and you decide what words you use in your articles.

Another thing is that you spend hours in front of your computer screen, writing, editing, managing IT issues, if you work for digital, researching, optimizing content for search engine and much more. You rewrite stuff, prepare for interviews, prepare for events, and basically you always need to be ready to write or appear in front of the camera to interview people or record something for social media. It especially happens if you work for any top magazine. You are responsible for your brand so you always need to be updated with what is going on in your niche.

Fitness editor is an editor who is an expert especially in fitness and everything connected to that topic – dieting, workouts, fitness culture, celebrity workouts, fitness apps, fitness gadgets, supplements, gyms, wellness places etc.

Editorial research. Do the research

One of the most important thing is also knowing how to make a good research. An editor is pretty much like a private investigator. You really need be good at at. It is a very important skill to make sure you’ve read everything and you educated yourself enough in particular topic that made you believe, you are able to write about it. What is also important, is that you research words for SEO and you can make your articles being search engine friendly. Do the research for the news in social media and be really informed what is happening in the niche.

What an editor do?

Additionally, if you are a part of an editorial office in print, you participate in photo shoots, branding, meetings with many clients, creating content with other editors, public relations companies or going to editorial office meetings. But also you attend press days that have a place early in the morning or very late at night like fashion shows or special events that you need to go and represent your brand. It is a part of your work. This really seems like a never ending day and for sure is not a 9-5 job.

Also as a fitness editor you need to always look good and be in shape. You workout to feel and look good. You try new workouts, gym places and everything what might help you to stay in shape. As a person who is really into fitness like me, it is a dream that comes true. Enjoy every aspect of that fun part!

Working as a part of one brand. Not a freelancer

The another part of this job is less fun. If you work for any particular brand, like me working couple years ago at SHAPE, you usually cannot have a part time job in content writing because of the competition rights. It happens very rarely when an editor has his or her own website and can promote his or her business. It only happens when an editor is a well-known influencer or a celebrity that actually brings readers to the magazine. However, thumbs up for being a freelancer because you are responsible where and what you write.
